A mime alone under a theatre spotlight, in front of a red velvet curtain. White greasepaint, arched painted eyebrows, a black teardrop, red lips, a beret and a striped shirt. He opens his eyes and starts pulling faces in time with a waltz: surprise, laughter, a wink, puffed cheeks, anger, disgust, fear, a kiss. Each expression snaps into place on the beat. A sad interlude in cold light, a lively reprise with one face per beat, then the spotlight closes in on him and goes out. A soft, slightly melancholic waltz in D minor with music box, piano, pizzicato bass and strings, 2:24. This is not an animated film: it is a 34 KB (34,392 bytes) Linux program that computes everything while it runs. There is no video, no texture, no 3D model and no audio file. The face is sculpted from mathematical formulas and drawn with raymarching in OpenGL shaders: skin grain, expression wrinkles, light glowing through the skin and reflections in the eyes. The music is synthesized by the program itself at startup. Every movement is locked to the music, so the demo plays exactly the same every time. Rendered frame by frame from the program, 1080p at 60 fps.
